Welcome to the Mobile Bay Labor Journal!
We are a left-wing coalition newsletter based in Mobile, Alabama, that currently publishes online every other month. We cover a broad range of topics, from ecology, to protests, to labor rights, to prison abolition, to Palestinian liberation, to border abolition, and so much more. We feature articles, art, and events from people and groups in our area who are trying to make the world a better place for marginalized people. Since our first issue (released May 1st, 2025), our goal has been to provide nuanced, actionable, and detailed information on the Mobile Bay area, which we hope will help serve as a springboard for further social change, and help people get connected to the many wonderful organizers already making changes in our area.
Frequently Asked Questions
Want the journal to be more accessible?
So do we! We are looking for a team to make image descriptions and text versions for all of our editions! Let us know if that is you! Email us at MobileBayLaborJournal01@gmail.com.
Interested in printed versions?
So are we! First and foremost, you are welcome to print copies of our paper for yourself and your friends, just don’t sell them at a profit.
If you want to help us print more broadly, there are a few logistical hurdles that you could help us overcome. We are looking for a union print shop to work with, funds to print, and people to help distribute printed copies. We would like to distribute copies for free, or at cost, or at cost + the cost of the next printing, depending on what the pathway to printing looks like and what resources are available to us. We are not a for-profit group, and really just want to cover our cost! Email us at MobileBayLaborJournal01@gmail.com.
Want copies of art from the journal?
Everything we post is available under fair use, and you can make a copy for yourself. Just don’t print copies to sell to other people. If an artwork in the journal is uncredited, or by HollyRose Baker, feel free to print and distribute free copies of the art. You can make posters, fliers, or share them on social media, just don’t sell them or claim them as your own.
Want to donate?
Cool! We are happy that you want to help! The issue is, we don’t want to be forced into a formal structure, and the US tax system requires groups like us to form a formal structure if we accept monetary donations. Leftist groups are often legally prosecuted for tax reasons, even when there are no real grounds for this. We don’t want to give the federal government any excuse to shut us down. One thing you can do is gift us WordPress plans to help cover website costs.
What about the Substack we used to have?
Our readers asked us to move away from Substack as a publishing platform because they have a tendency to platform fascists. At the same time, we lost access to our Substack account. We figured this was a great time to move on to other publishing avenues, and now we have a website! We are sorry we weren’t able to make a post on that Substack informing our former subscribers, and if we ever regain access, we will do so, and then we will cease using Substack. The money made from the six months of having the Substack ($200) is being used to cover expenses for this website.
Is there another way to get new editions of the journal sent to me automatically?
Sadly, not right now. We are looking for someone who is committed to maintaining a mailing list and helping us establish a mailing list infrastructure. If that’s you, let us know! Email us at MobileBayLaborJournal01@gmail.com. Otherwise, you can find our editions here on our website, or on our social media accounts Instagram and Facebook.
